Program Description
Step back in time and discover one of the most fascinating historical sites on the Kenyan coast. Gede Ruins are the remains of an ancient Swahili city hidden amongst lush tropical vegetation, where history, culture and nature come together to create a truly unique atmosphere.
After being picked up from your hotel, you will travel to Gede Ruins, located near Watamu. The history of this remarkable site dates back to the 12th century, when it flourished as an important trading centre along the Indian Ocean coast. Thanks to extensive trade networks, the city maintained strong connections with the Middle East and India, becoming one of the wealthiest settlements in the region.
During your visit, you will explore the remains of coral stone buildings, an ancient mosque and former residential quarters. The surviving structures offer a fascinating glimpse into daily life in the city and reveal the significance of this once-thriving settlement before its mysterious abandonment centuries ago.
The ruins are surrounded by a lush forest that provides a natural habitat for a variety of wildlife. As you walk through the tropical landscape, you may spot different species of monkeys and birds that inhabit this protected area. The combination of rich history and natural beauty makes Gede one of the most distinctive attractions on the Kenyan coast.
After the visit, you will return to your hotel.
The order of visits and the programme may be subject to change.
