Program Description
Forbidden books destroyed with an axe, hidden handwritten notes, and a machine supposedly designed to “read minds” - they may sound like elements of a fictional story, yet they were part of reality. At the Vabamu Museum of Occupations and Freedom, you’ll discover the stories of Estonians who lived under Soviet occupation and a world where control and fear shaped everyday life.
Behind the objects and documents are, above all, the people who lived through this period. Their choices, experiences and attempts to preserve their freedom reveal what life was like when freedom of action and expression was restricted. You’ll discover stories of courage, sacrifice and resistance, offering a personal perspective on this chapter of Estonia’s history.
The stories also reveal the darker side of the Soviet occupation. You’ll learn more about repression and crimes against humanity, as well as the political control that affected the daily lives of people in Estonia. Rather than focusing only on dates and events, the museum explores what these historical events meant for individuals.
Vabamu, however, is not only a story about the loss of freedom. It is also about people who, despite difficult circumstances, refused to give up their identity, courage and desire to shape their own future. Through their experiences, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of why freedom holds such an important place in Estonia’s modern history.
Sometimes a single object can reveal more about the past than a long list of dates. At Vabamu, you’ll uncover stories preserved in objects, words and memories of those who experienced life under occupation.

Entry
- Children under 9 can enter free of charge
- Children with disabilities aged 16 and under, as well as adults with severe disabilities, are entitled to free admission with a carer
- ICOM Card and Tallinn Card holders, as well as journalists with a valid IFJ press card, can enter free of charge

- You'll receive your voucher via email, immediately after booking.
- To gain entry, you'll need to exchange it for the actual entrance ticket.
- Show your voucher to the local representative, who will issue your entrance ticket, or contact the tour operator for help (contact details are in your confirmation email and on the voucher).
